STORY AND PLOT: STRUCTURE, Cont
One of the most useful ways of learning structure, story
and scene momentum is by examining it in other films. This
is not new. Many books and seminars go through the classics
and break the films down in terms of story and structure.
This class is different. We have found that examining any
random film can sometimes be just as helpful as examining
classics that are flawlessly executed.
Watching a film that doesn't work can show you quite a bit
about structure and story. When a film that can afford high
dollar actors and production budgets fails, it almost
always fails on a structural level. This class will show
how all films, good and bad, traditional and innovative,
still follow the same principles of good storytelling. This
is why students who register early will get to pick a few
of the films examined in class. These movies will be chosen
a week earlier and analyzed "on the fly" in class to see
what worked, what didn't, and how the principles we learned
could have fixed it.
The class will will not only improve your ability to
structure out your story before you start writing, it will
allow you to see structure for what is: your greatest
friend and ally. Structure is not a burden, but a liberator
that allows you to focus on telling your story. No matter
what your previous training in structure, this class will
help you take it to the next level.
